  • Wear a well fitting helmet.
  • Only 1 finger should fit between your chin and the fastened straps
  • The straps should feel snug and be tight when your mouth is open
  • Shake your head up and down and side to side to make sure that the helmet is snug
  • Never wear a hat, high ponytail, big hair clips or a bandana under a helmet
  • Ensure that the helmet has a safety sticker—CSA, ASTM, CPSC, NOSCAE, Snell
  • Check for cracks, dents, broken or frayed straps
  • Use multiple impact helmets that are designed to withstand several falls
  • Wear a helmet and enjoy the ride

ANY HELMET IS BETTER THAN NONE!!!

Helmets should be replaced when…
  • They have been in a crash—some helmets can withstand more than one impact—check
the manufacturers’ instructions to see when you need to replace your helmet
  • They are damaged—cracks, dents, broken or frayed straps
  • You have had it for too many years—helmets lose their protective ability as plastics
become brittle and pads wear down
  • You have outgrown it—a helmet that does not fit well will not provide adequate protection
